Introduction
We received detailed information on SEGA’s upcoming modern spy RPG Alpha Protocol at E3 today and we are here to share it all with you. Keep reading for our take on this most exciting title!
Game Background
SEGA Alpha Protocol is a spy-based RPG in the modern day. Players assume the role of Mike Thorton (not Thornton, as some sites have incorrectly spelled it), an ex-CIA agent who is trying to unravel a vast conspiracy. The game takes place in and between several cities, including Rome, Taipei, Moscow, and locations in Saudi Arabia.
Play the Game as You Want
Alpha Protocol gives players a lot of freedom to play the game according to their style, from customizing their character’s appearance to completing missions. Nothing in the game is set in stone; players can do the missions in any order, and the game changes according to their actions. There is no “good” or “evil” way to do the game, so you can play the game and act however you want.
Leveling and Skills
Players will gain XP by completing missions and quests; they can use these points to invest in skills that enhance their abilities. There are nine core skills, ranging across weapon, tech, toughness (health), and martial arts classes. There are active and passive abilities; some skills (such as improved accuracy) are always on, but other skills (such as slow motion) are something the player needs to activate.
Your Character
The main character Mike Thorton is male-only; there will be no female version. Alpha Protocol is heavily dependent on Thorton’s interaction with other characters; you can be hostile, talkative, and so on in conversations. Interaction between your character and others is not limited to face-to-face meetings; players can interact through business deals and email. Players will have a handler that helps coordinates their assignments. There will be opportunities to grow relationships with other characters; creating a good relationship with an arms dealer will yield discounts on weapons and supplies. There are romantic options with certain female characters.
Players can be stealthy (special weapons, armor, and gadgets will help) or take a full guns blazing approach – again, you can play the game according to your style. Examples of gadgets include shock traps, noise mimicking, and other James Bond-like devices.
Character Customization
Players can customize their character’s face, skin color, head gear, and other small items. Weapon and armor loadouts are also completely customizable. Thorton can carry two weapons.
Gameplay
The gameplay is very third-person shooter-like and full of intense action. The martial arts moves are well-coordinated; performing spinning kicks and head stomping people is especially entertaining. Running around and putting people down in slow motion mode is awesome. Weapons are varied and customizable; guns looked and sounded great. Special effects are visually impressive.
Conclusion
We were impressed with the demo; Alpha Protocol is still a work in progress and will be released in early 2010. Keep checking back for updates and other game coverage!
